Anyone else finding this new remote-work routine is actually encouraging a more frequent workout schedule? I am finding that my new WFH (work-from-home) regimen is increasing my time spent outside - and I am LOVING it. While life may look a little different these days, I am finding these small joys and victories in this new reality and the fresh air, spring flowers and birds chirping continue to brighten my mood and motivate me even more to step outside and be active.
'Back to Basics' couldn't be more true and reflective of the state we are all in - more than ever I am appreciating nature, time spent with family, becoming creative at home, cooking new meals and garnering inspiration. Amidst it all I am finding that remaining active has been so healthy for my mental and physical self. I am going to share a few of my favorite at-home workouts, what my exercise routine looks like these days, and some fueling snacks to pair to hopefully inspire you too!
I am personally not one that opts for high-intensity workouts, but I do always aim to spike my heart rate, work up a sweat and move for at least 1 hour a day. Exercises I prefer include light jogging, pilates, yoga, hiking and core exercises I can do on my mat from the comfort of my home.
With a little extra time at home these days, and a neighborhood with walking and bike trails - I strive for at least 3 days a week outside jogging around my neighborhood for about 30 minutes. After this, I come home and do another 30 minutes of core exercises at my house. The best part is, you don't need any special equipment for these types of workouts!
Some of my favorite moves? Planks and side planks, squats, lunges, mountain climbers, burpees, and standard pushups. These moves may be basic, but they keep me strong, lean and in-shape. After an hour workout my favorite thing to do is cool down with a smoothie, and while I have plenty of favorite smoothie recipes, lately my go-to is this Strawberry Raspberry Green Smoothie. It's simple, nutritious, and loaded with healthy antioxidants to replenish any nutrients I may have sweat out during my session. If you have a favorite protein or recovery powder, feel free to add this into your blend as well - I recommend a neutral flavor like vanilla.
If you have hiking trails within close proximity to your home like I do, another fun workout is to head outside and go for a long hike! I typically aim for a hike that's anywhere from 4-6 miles with lots of hills and incline if possible. Of course, when utilizing your local parks and trails be sure to exercise your own discretion when it comes to social distancing and maintain a 6-feet or more distance from other trail goers. I'll typically head out for a hike at the end of the work day and always on the weekend, and love to come home to a protein-packed snack like this Blackberry Avocado Chicken Salad. I'll add in some brown rice on the side for some added carbohydrates to really fill me up. This is a delicious and protein-packed post workout snack, lunch or even dinner option that I regularly go to.
I'm a sucker for a quick and easy snack and these Granola Berry Yogurt Stackers do just the trick after a morning of pilates. Lately, I like to get up, light a candle and turn on some light music while I do pilates in my living room. Deep breathing, stretching movements and a moment to become grounded before the day unfolds is one of my favorite ways to start the day. Once I wrap up about 30-45 minutes of pilates I am ready for food and coffee, and whip up this easy berry and yogurt breakfast. I also like to sprinkle a little cinnamon and chia on it as well, and whatever I don't finish I revisit later in the afternoon if I find a craving come on. Having something light and healthy like this already made in the refrigerator is such a good option to have on hand when I feel my 'snacking hat' come on rather than grab the crackers in my pantry!
