The Winter Games are Inspiring Delicious and Healthy Snacks

Cal Giant | February 13, 2018

It’s the season of sports! Well, the 2018 Winter Games to be exact. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE watching the top athletes from around the world compete - whether it’s the summer or winter games, I am always tuning in or live streaming the events to keep up-to-date on schedules and medal winners. Not to mention… the snowboarding and figure-skating competitions – these are my personal favorites to watch (anyone see Chloe Kim’s run last night?!)

Between the New Year kicking off just last month and watching these dedicated athletes compete, it’s hard not to gather some personal motivation to get moving after work. My outdoor activity of choice is running. I know, I know… what sounds fun about running?! But I find running to be relaxing and almost therapeutic, it’s my time to unplug and center my thoughts – and a view of the ocean doesn’t hurt! Whatever your sport may be, it’s important to be fueling your body with the proper nutrients – and no, I’m not talking about pre-workout supplements, I’m talking about real, fresh, delicious meals and snacks.

One of my go-to pre-workout snacks is the Butter Me Up Smoothie. With a scoop of almond butter added to the mix, any signs of sluggishness or fatigue during my workout disappear. Not to mention, it’s delicious, easy-to-digest and has added protein from the Greek yogurt, so it keeps me full through the duration of my workout. However, sometimes if I’m feeling extra hungry and need an added push I’ll opt for a Homemade Blueberry Lara Bar as well. These are a staple snack in my diet, and the blended pecans, cashews, dates and blueberries amp up my energy levels hours after consumption. I’ll typically make a batch before the week kicks off so I have one for all my week-night workouts.

After I have finished up a run and some stretches, I typically whip up an easy, protein-packed nutrient dense meal like Blackberry Avocado Chicken Salad. I always try to eat a snack rich in protein and complex carbs within 30-40 minutes of a workout to refuel my body and keep my energy levels maintained. The chicken salad is so tasty, and the blackberry garnish adds a hint of sweetness to this zesty, savory snack. Our Strawberry Bacon Avocado Toast is another one of my favorites – with a great mix of healthy fat, protein, complex carbs and a punch of vitamins and antioxidants from the strawberry topping – you have the perfect post workout combo!
