My husband always jokes that the way to his heart is food, and that my cooking is why he picked me over all of the other fish in the sea. While I know he says this to get under my skin, I do think there’s some truth to the saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
My husband and my father are both HUGE foodies, and they love to share their love of cooking when we’re able to spend time together as a family. After watching the two of them bond while grilling the most amazing burgers over Memorial Day weekend, I decided that the best gift I could give to both of them is delicious food and quality time – with me of course!
That’s why I’m putting together a family cookout for Father’s Day weekend. My dad’s eyes light up like a kid in the candy store whenever he’s able to fire up his grill, and the man is going to freak out when I reveal what’s been “marinating” in the foil packets I'm bringing over.
Well… I’m not sure you can do a lot of marinating to a grilled cheese, but I can’t wait for him to grill these cheddar, mozzarella, and blueberry grilled cheeses! I’m totally going to stuff too much cheese into the foiled packets, because I want the cheese to get crispy on the crust. Let’s be honest, “burnt” cheese is amazing!
While the boys cheers with beers over the grill, my mom and I will be sipping on berry refreshers. My dad feels that berry refreshers aren’t manly - but he always steals a sip from my mother’s glass. :)
The boys think this grilled cheese is the main event, but they’ll quickly change their minds when my mother reveals that she’s made her world famous Guinness chocolate cake layered with cream cheese frosting. She and I are currently placing bets to see how long it takes for the two of them to devour the entire cake.
While I know a cookout where my dad’s firing up the grill may not seem like a gift, I know family meals are when he’s happiest. If your dad is just wanting to sit back and relax for Father’s Day, grill up these blueberry treats on your own or turn it into quality bonding time where he’s teaching you how to grill!
You may be a grown adult with a family of your own, but there’s nothing like letting your dad continue to teach you a few new tricks.
