The American Revolution for Real Food

Cindy | July 24, 2015

You know what we need more of these days? Real food. In U.S. Congressmen Tim Ryan’s article The Real Food Revolution, he states, “We Americans love this fake food.” It seems like everywhere I go I’m surrounded by processed foods in which the top ingredients are unpronounceable- Things like high-fructose corn sweetener, azodicarbonamide, and propylene glycol alginate… Huh? He admits, “We must [love it], because the Fortune 500 companies behind these tasty snacks and prepared meals earned $439 billion in 2012.” He continues by listing some seriously shocking stats:

  • 35 percent of American adults are obese.
  • More than a third of our children are overweight or obese.
  • Obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.
  • In 2012, 15 percent of American households – that’s 49 million people – were “food insecure,” meaning they didn’t have consistent access to nutritionally adequate food on a daily basis.

Pretty outrageous, right? Obviously, the love between Americans and this “fake food” is far from mutual.

It’s time to get real, America.

Here at California Giant Berry Farms, we’re committed to growing real food. Producing the freshest, most nutritious berries for you and your families is our mission and we continuously strive to make a difference in the lives of our employees, neighbors and customers.  In 2015, we launched The California Giant Foundation. The organization was established to drive positive changes in the areas of:

  • Childhood obesity and school nutrition
  • Hunger and food insecurity (Decreasing food waste)
  • Community support and development
  • Prevention and awareness
In addition to supporting 50+ organizations each year, the Foundation also coordinates the annual Tour de Fresh. This cycling event (which consists of 60+ of our friends in fresh produce) raised over $140,000 in 2014 to provide salad bars to schools across the US. It gets better! This year, the Tour has a goal of donating over 100 salad bars (raising over $275,000)! We are proud to be a part of this great event and even prouder to be spreading "real food" across the country and to the kids who most need the good nutrition that "real food" provides!
Our Tour de Fresh riders would love your support! Visit Tour de Fresh today to donate to a rider and a school.  Every little bit helps!

A lot of people ask about "the person behind the posts" on The Buzz. Who is THAT knowledgeable about all things berry-related?
