Giving Hope through Faith Foundation

In 2006 Sherry and Dirk Tucker lost their precious son, Zach, to a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) tumor. Zach was just shy of his 9th birthday. It was clear to the couple that there was a bigger purpose in Zach’s short life, and it was up to them to share the lessons they learned with other families dealing with pediatric cancer.

Sherry and Dirk formed the Giving Hope through Faith Foundation in 2007 in Zach’s honor. The foundation has a focus on pediatric cancer based on Sherry and Dirk’s personal journey, but with many friends’ families facing the difficulties of adult cancer, the couple decided not to limit the demographic by age. The Giving Hope through Faith Foundation helps families who are dealing with cancer diagnoses of all types by sponsoring a family financially and spiritually for one year as they work together to battle this horrific disease.

To date, Giving Hope through Faith has assisted over 300 families with financial support and by providing messages of hope written by the Tuckers based on what helped them during Zach’s journey. The positive response has been overwhelming; many families have told the Tuckers that the financial support is appreciated, but it’s the uplifting messages they receive that make the real difference.

Giving Hope through Faith provides families a monthly care package for 12 months in an effort to walk along side families during treatment. Several events are held throughout the year to support the foundation, including the Zach Tucker Golf Scramble and the “Give them Hope, Make them Smile” 5k run. The local community has also embraced the foundation with support, and we sponsor an annual soccer match between local teams as well as a ballet performance each December in their honor. Our community has really grown to see how dedicated this family is, and their work is a blessing to our community and our families.

The foundation is 100% volunteer based with all board members and staff employed in other careers. Our time is donated time, and we are able to turn around funds to sponsored families at a rate of 96 cents of every dollar.

The foundation’s funding comes from the support of our community and from wonderful organizations like California Giant Berry Farms. The journey families must face when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer can be isolating, dark and scary. Lives can change in an instant and we are here to let others know there are friends praying for them and here for them if they need to ask questions or share their stories.
