How to Stay Healthy While on Vacation

Ahhhh, summer. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and we are all loading up and heading to our happy places. And what do we usually find in our happy place? FOOD. And lots of it! It’s a vacation after all, so we allow ourselves to overindulge because vacation is basically an extended “cheat day,” right? The truth is, with a little careful planning you can stay on a nutritious track and feel great all vacation long! Here are our tips for staying healthy while on vacation:

1. Don’t deny yourself delicacies.

You can still enjoy the local fare and indulge in desserts and savory entrees! Just don’t OVER indulge! Denying yourself that fresh-from-the-oven pastry in Paris is just going to lead to over-eating later, so allow yourself to enjoy treats and delicacies in moderation. Which leads us to our second tip…

2. Slow down and enjoy your food!

What’s the rush? Take the time to enjoy your meal – you’re on vacation after all! Slow down when you eat, savor the taste and your stomach will have time to alert you when it’s time to stop!

3. Share entrees.

Vacations usually consist of eating out for nearly every meal. Restaurants are notorious for their ridiculously large portion sizes, and these get us into dietary trouble! Try sharing your entrée with someone to help control the amount of food you’re eating.

4. Plan and pack meals ahead!

If you’re going to be in the car, avoid drive-thrus and added travel time by packing a cooler filled with healthy, filling lunch and snacks! Sandwiches, yogurt and fresh fruits and veggies are easy to pack. Healthy snacks like granola, fresh berries, celery sticks, greek yogurt and pre-made smoothies are easy to store in a cooler or insulated bag. Try making these Almond-Berry Protein Bars as a nutritious snack option for the road. Berries are also a great road snack just as they are! Simply fill Tupperware containers with fresh berries and keep in a cooler to preserve their freshness. Try packing whole blueberries to enjoy with yogurt or capped strawberries as a sweet treat!

5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

We can’t say this one enough – vacations are notorious for leaving our bodies thirsty, especially if you’re spending time in the sun. Make sure to take water with you wherever you go and keep filling up (your bottle and your body) constantly throughout the day.

6. Stay active!

Of course vacations are supposed to be a time of rest and relaxation, but exercise actually helps your mind feel rested and relieved. Avoid added cab and subway fees and walk to your destination as much as you can! If you’re on the beach, walking up and down the shore every few hours is a great workout, not to mention swimming! Hike, bike or even play a sport like golf or tennis to keep your body in motion.

If you can follow just these few helpful hints while you are away, you will be right on track! And of course, eating peak of season, fresh berries is a great way to satisfy your vacation sweet tooth and energize yourself for a long day of sun bathing, site seeing, or whatever it is you have planned. What are your tips for staying refreshed, energized and feeling healthy while you travel?
