This time last year, I was putting together the finishing touches for my wedding in June. I had so many other brides that had come before me, telling me how stressful and time consuming planning a wedding could be. How is this supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life when it's so stressful?! I refused. I refused to let my wedding planning stress me out. I wanted to look back and think of how fun I had spending hours on Pinterest, circling ideas from magazines, and finally seeing my vision come to life. I know what you are thinking, she probably had a wedding planner that did everything for her...NOPE! I actually did everything myself. I had a family friend that helped me the day of my wedding, but other than that, it was all me. And I loved it that way. So take the time to really enjoy the process, because you only get to do it once!
My inspiration was watercolors and whimsical florals. I wanted delicate pastels and unique flowers to help accent the beautiful Napa Valley surroundings. Decor can be expensive, so make sure to think of things that have a pop of color and fill the tables without breaking the bank. Like...berries! You can use berries in a variety of ways - see below!
Centerpieces: flowers can be one of the most expensive elements of a wedding. Try using berries to fill your flower center pieces or even make an entire centerpiece out of berries!
Strawberry name card holder: make a slit in the berry and place the name card right in there!
Cocktails: We made large batch cocktails for our wedding and people are still talking about them today! Rent or purchase large beverage dispensers, muddle fresh berries and mix with your favorite liquor and mixers.
Strawberry, Vodka/Gin, Mint, Lime
Blackberry, Bourbon, Basil, Lemon
Cake: Ditch the boring wedding cake and add berries to change things up
Strawberry & Hazelnut Creme
Blackberry & Caramel
Blueberry & Cream Cheese
Getting ready food: This is the time where your jitters get the best of you and your mind races to make sure you didn’t forget anything. Taking the time to eat a full meal for lunch before walking down the aisle? Doesn’t always happen. Make sure to have fresh berries, nuts, and cheese around to snack on for you and your wedding party. Easy to grab, and enough to hold you over until the big dinner!
My best advice to any bride to be is to stay true to yourself and worry about what makes YOU and your fiance happy. Decorate the way that inspires you, pick food you are excited about, do things a little non traditional if that’s the kind of person you are! I ended up picking a lavender wedding dress that no one expected, and I will always look back at our wedding day as just that, OUR day, and it was the perfect reflection of that.
